The Sauna

The Ultimate Dolomite
Trail Running Experience

It’s time to leave the norms behind, ditch the Strava tracks, and stop worrying about personal records.
Come immerse yourself in a run that focuses on being in the mountains, experiencing culture, and having fun.
Don’t schedule your rest days just yet, though; this route requires earnest stamina and unique training.

Local Tradition
Meets Alpine running

Welcome to the Sauna Traverse. A multi day trail run through the Italian Dolomites, utilizing a route that is just as much local mountain tradition, as it is rugged alpine terrain, a course that might never have been realized without a Swedish cultural influence.

This route crosses through the middle of the Dolomites over 4 days. We will top beautiful peaks, log kilometers through the alpine valleys, and enjoy the luxury of the local huts. There is just one caveat, a little Scandinavian twist to the Dolomites – we will be linking mountain Refugio’s equipt with Saunas. And while this might sound like a spa , surviving the traditional Swedish approach to a Sauna could be the most challenging obstacle for the untrained. Are you ready to sweat?

The purpose of this project is to create a lighthearted storyline that removes the serious and competitive attitude of competitive mountain running. Of course there will be long days, but the point is to enjoy mountain running for its simplicity and fun. To show a side of the community which isn’t records, races, and competition.

The Dolomites

The Dolomites in Northeastern Italy form part of the Southern Limestone Alps. Like many iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites, the quaint villages and easily accessed vistas in this region are notorious amidst tourists. And while the mountain trails attract enthusiasts, it is often only to explore one or two trade routes. For many outside of the DACH region, the Dolomites are even overshadowed by other regions in the Alps.

The area is rich in possibilities, though, and with a complex system of trails cut by mountain culture, farming, and war, it is no surprise the beautiful trade routes are so popular. As you start looking deeper, you begin to see the potential for creative adventures that weave through the region of Ladin, South Tyrolean, and Italian culture. This particular route is just one way to take advantage of the area through our own twist of creativity.
